THE EFFECT OF THE USE OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS ON THE GOVERNMENT SECONDARY SCHOOL  STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN MATHEMATICS IN SOKOTO  SOUTH  LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, SOKOTO STATE, NIGERIA

Abstracts

The study was to determine the effect of utilization of instructional materials by mathematics teachers (visual aids, audio-visual aids and realia) on the student academic performance in mathematics in Government secondary schools in the Sokoto South local Government area, Nigeria. The total sample size 120 students were drawn from total population 159 using a research adviser (2006). A true experimental Pretest-Post-test Only Design was used in order to randomly gather data from SS2 students in from Sultan Bello Secondary School Sokoto and Giginya Memorial Secondary School Sokoto.  Paired sample t- test were used to test the hypotheses of the study with the aid of SPSS version 20.0. The findings revealed that there was a statistical significant difference between the mean scored after the use of audio-visual aids and realia but there was no statistical significant differences between the mean scored before and after the utilization of visual aids by mathematics teachers. It is concluded that there is a significant effect of audio visual aids and realia uses by mathematics teachers on the academic performance of Government Secondary schools Students in Sokoto South Local Government Area. The researchers recommend that the government, Ministry of Basic and Secondary school Education and other stakeholders in education should provide, train and develop the teachers’ skills and competencies so that they can effectively use instructional materials in order to have the required skills in teaching Mathematics and It also suggested the need for the Mathematic teachers to use more realia that are found within and outside the school environment.
