NO FUNGICIDE BUT YEASTS TO ENCOUNTER Penicillium FRUIT ROT OF Citrus reticulatus -AN ECOFRIENDLY APPROACH

Abstracts

A dangerous fungal post harvest disease, Penicillium fruit rot of Citrus reticulatus Blanco (blue mold disease) is caused mainly by Penicillium digitatum (Pers. Fr.) Sacs. and is generally managed by application of fungicides which are causing health hazards and environment pollution. For ecofriendly management of this pathogen or disease, three yeasts namely Candida famata, Debaryomyces hansenii and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa were applied in by wound method. Three concentrations such as 106, 107 and 108 cells / mL of each yeast were separately applied in these experiments. In all yeasts 108 cells / mL concentration was best to reduce the disease incidence. In wound method, when 108 cells / mL of Candida famata, Rhodotorula mucilaginosa and Debaryomyces hansenii were applied separately, the percent of disease were 12.45, 20.11 and 25.23% respectively in comparison to control or untreated sets where 90% of disease recorded. Candida famata from the experiment screened as best for protection of Citrus up to 87.55% from this disease. The non- volatile and volatile metabolites of these three yeasts were collected and applied against the growth and spore germination of P. digitatum. The both kind of metabolites are able to inhibit the growth and spore germination of this pathogen. The secretion of antifungal metabolites and direct competition for nutrients or space with the pathogens were assessed as the mechanism of biocontrol. The formulation of most antagonistic yeast i,e C. famata of this work has been done. In Citrus industry this formulation can be applied safely for combating Penicillium post harvest rot of Citrus during storage, transit and marketing of Citrus fruits.
